As the Allied forces approach Paris in August 1944, German Colonel Von Waldheim is desperate to take all of France's greatest paintings to Germany. He manages to secure a train to transport the valuable art works even as the chaos of retreat descends upon them. The French resistance however wants to stop them from stealing their national treasures but have received orders from London that they are not to be destroyed. The station master, Labiche, is tasked with scheduling the train and making it all happen smoothly but he is also part of a dwindling group of resistance fighters tasked with preventing the theft. He and others stage an elaborate ruse to keep the train from ever leaving French territory.

Andrew M (ca) wrote: Star Trek Beyond rolls the series towards a turkey, with another enjoyable addition to the current Star Trek prequel-reboot series. In many ways, Justin Lin's direction is less assured than Abrams', namely in recapturing the same emotional heights of Star Trek and Into Darkness, but in other ways, Lin has crafted what feels much more like Star Trek of old than Abrams' two outings. The crew of the USS Enterprise use their skills in their particular fields to their full potential, giving everyone something to do (it's especially nice to see Chekov have a meaty role following Anton Yelchin's unfortunate passing) and crating the kinds of relationships that made the original series work so well. Lin does a great job of throwing in tasteful nods to the past entries of the franchise that are much less blatant than in Into Darkness, for example (one plot point involving the in-film passing of Spock Prime is especially touching), while also introducing new characters and worlds to the series. As far as new characters go, Sofia Boutella's Jaylah is a highlight, with a sense of resourcefulness and strength that could help make her a future staple in the Enterprise crew in potential sequels. Unfortunately, in line with the two preceding films, Beyond struggles with its villain, Krall. The character has a relatively clever twist revealed in the third act, but his motivations are that of the typical MacGuffin-hunting scoundrel, and the talent of Idris Elba is completely wasted. This is relatively minor in the grand scope of the film though, because just like the other two films, it's simply too much of a good time to be brought down by something like this. It never boldly goes beyond where the series has gone before, but to deny the utter fun of Star Trek Beyond would be a shame.

Nicki M (kr) wrote: I don't generally like period pieces, but this was very well done. Incredibly dark story of a little orphaned girl who is married off to her guardians sickly and dopey son. Elizabeth Olsen and tom Felton are both outstanding. The sexual obsession between the girl and the family friend is compelling as you can just see it is going to turn bad and it sure does. Half way through, a plan is decided to dispose of the husband and then it's a fast unraveling for all involved from there. At 1 half hours it doesn't wear out its welcome either, as this genre often seems to.
