The Wax Mask
Paris, 1900: a couple are horribly murdered by a masked man with a metal claw who rips their hearts out. The sole survivor and witness to the massacre is a young girl. Twelve years later in Rome a new wax museum is opened, whose main attractions are lifelike recreations of gruesome murder scenes. A young man bets that he will spend the night in the museum but is found dead the morning after. Soon, people start disappearing from the streets of Rome and the wax museum halls begin filling with new figures...

(fr) wrote: Two amazing actors...love their work, but this was a poor choice. The poem gets in the way of the characters to develop. Can't "feel" by conversation or emotional clues what is going on between them; can't sympathize because they are single faceted characters. PBS does wonderful things and I am disappointed, it could have been stellar.

(kr) wrote: I give this Half-star because of one thing only: Martial Arts. The rest is all crap. about 75% of the characters sound and act retarded. If you are under 10 years, I wouldn't be surprised if you gave this film 5 stars and 2 enthusiastic thumbs up. but if you are an adult, I believe you would give this crap a low rating. try these points as examples1. The villians act like they are kids because there is not a bit of reality in them and they are so Melodramatic on there lines. 2. No one ever gets shot by a bullet 3. Tum Tum has Blonde hair......HUH? What about his brown hair?4. Hulk Hogan's lines are cheap shots. "Ha, give up now, you're no match for SWAT." "Game over lady, you plans done." What did a 5 year old write this crap? 5. Loni Anderson must have used 3 bottles of lip stick and 5 containers of powder to make a face look like that. "I'd rather be devoured by wolves." says Dave Dragon. I'd use that same line. So if you have have time to watch this, watch it while using the restroom. Yeah. It's that bad a movie.

(mx) wrote: Now here's a filthy, raunchy slice of hixploitation that, despite its tasteful handling of borderline pedophilic subject matter, would never ever EVER be made in today's studio system. Was the pedigree of Tennessee Williams and Elia Kazan enough to get it made in the stiflingly conservative 1950s? The surface of the plot, as it is, involves sexually repressed cotton farmer Karl Malden burning down Italian businessman Eli Wallach's brand new state-of-the-art cotton gin, and Wallach exacting revenge by seducing barely-legal Carroll Baker, who is Malden's child bride. As the clock ticks down towards Baby Doll's 20th birthday, and her presumed deflowering, she and Wallach spend a lazy afternoon in Malden's empty decrepit mansion stoking the slow boiling sexual tension, which quickly comes to a head during the most uncomfortable drunken dinner scene ever. It's extremely well acted, equally titillating and thought-provoking. The minimalist set design brings our attention front and center to the lurid love triangle, and the film generates a massive amount of tension out of its simplistic potboiler premise, reeling you in before going up in an oversexed inferno of sawdust and cotton. Somehow "Baby Doll" more than earns its R rating despite having no nudity, violence, or onscreen sex, and that has nothing to do with the hair-raising number of racial epithets. It's an intelligent adult drama with very complex and sensitive subject matter. Oh and did I mention it's also funny as hell?
