As a fan of artists whose primary focus isn't to be as cool as humanly possible (cf most surfer dude documentaries) it was nice to see artists enthusiastically dissing their early works and emphasizing how nerdy they were, but it was hard to tell how they got from there to fame or indeed how famous they got to be. But there's a definitely charm in a philosophy that embraces all of us who still secretly like to "make stuff" at home.

The story doesn't read as interesting as the movie presents it, as Connelly's alcoholic divorcee finds her home repossessed and auctioned to Kingsley and his Iranian family and the domestic struggle between them. It's all rather dramatic and would probably work very well as a stage play.

Lisa Cholodenko is a very interesting filmmaker and I wish she made more movies more often. Great writing and direction from her.

(br) wrote: I bet the book upon which the film is based is quite good... unfortunately, the movie itself is just too long. The first 40 minutes were engaging set-up, the next 40 were just more of the same -then came the fab ending that moved to quickly. Great idea that clearly influenced classics that followed but not quite a classic itself. 3-ish stars
