Stephen C (ca) wrote: Stunning French Thriller from Master Director Claude Chabrol. When Charles sees his son knocked down and killed in a hit and run accident ,he vows revenge on the person responsible. His tirless hunt leads him to Paul a rather obnoxious fellow who alienates nearly everyone around him with his beastly behaviour. The film is a straightforward revenge saga ,but in a master like Chabrols hands we get more twists and turns than one could have expected. The opening Sequence is stunning and Chabrol build the tension by using his probing camera style, the party sequence is a good example as the guests stay where they are making akward conversation as the camera probes around the room . Will Charles carry out his mission or will he be exposed? Chabrol is once again on top form here proving what a master at his craft he is. once seen never forgotten

Nate A (fr) wrote: A fictionalized account of the assassination of Ii Naosuke, the samurai noble responsible for ending Japan's closed border policy. Because of that, I thought this was going to be a propaganda film loaded with Japanese nationalism and xenophobia. Instead, it's kind of the opposite. The story mainly focuses on the Mifune character, a down on his luck ronin who is obsessed with doing whatever it takes to achieve status. Unbeknown to him, the samurai's days were numbered and the Meiji restoration just around the corner, so there's kind of a futility to the whole picture. There's a very obvious familial tragic twist that happens later on too, so it plays out a little like Greek drama. Not as good as the Okamoto's "Sword of Doom", but still a ripping samurai film with a fantastic fight in the snows of Edo at the end.
