Devon B (br) wrote: Acacia is a South Korean horror film about a Doctor and his wife seeking to adopt a child together. The wife is attracted to a little orphan boy's artistic talent (for drawing creepy looking pictures of trees), thinking he's got a high I.Q. When they get the boy home, strange things start happening. He has a strange fascination with insects and the acacia tree in their back yard. Soon, the mother gets pregnant and the couple have their own "real" child, and the adopted son gets jealous. It even seems as though he'll hurt the baby, and the couple start to discuss the real possibility of sending him back to the orphanage. He overhears this conversation though, and before running off into the night, he declares his mom is a "tree". Meanwhile, the dad, who is an ob/gyn, delivers a dead baby then rushes home. It was around the halfway mark I realized this movie wasn't very coherent, scary or even interesting. After the boy runs away, the tree grows leaves, and then there's a pointless rape scene. It's obvious the filmmakers were trying to take an artistic approach to making a horror movie, but in the end it is just about a "killer tree", and how scary can you possibly make such a thing?

Faris A (mx) wrote: It's a strange but yet perfect masterpiece that drives it with it's crafting fluid directing and eye embellishing cinematography. A must see film that takes you out of this world.

Jonathan B (es) wrote: This is a great family drama starring Meryl Streep as a tyrannical matriarch and Julia Roberts as one of her daughters. As members of the Weston family head to the family home following the suicide of their father, dark secrets emerge and skeletons just keep on rattling out of those closets. It is a comedy of the deepest black with plenty high melodrama along the way. The movie builds towards one of the most excruciating family meals where the acid-tongued Streep launches into several family members, taking no prisoners. The movie is also peppered with some deeply touching and moving scenes which help to sweeten the bitter nature of the plot and I was moved to tears at a number of points. Amongst the cast, I particularly liked Margo Martindale as Aunt Mattie Fae and Misty Upham as Johnna, the ever present, watchful and sensible nurse/housemaid. With both the leads giving fine performances and some lovely uses of the Oklahoma plains, there's very little that's not to like in August: Osage County as long as you're not expecting the Partridge Family.

Mike S (it) wrote: The first time I've watched a Justice League movie, as I'm trying to up my knowledge prior to the DC cinematic universe kicking into gear. I enjoyed this film quite a bit. It's tough for writers to come up with threats for the Justice League, as so many of them are basically Gods. But by having Batman be the source of the weakness for each of them, was a great little idea, with a great little pay off when Batman says "The Justice League is under attack" and Alfred asks "from whom?" and Batman, as he runs off to save the day, "From me!".The voice acting is not always the strongest, and I'm not a fan of how the characters interact in these films. It diminishes the characters a bit when you see them all standing around like workers at an office.I really disliked the way Superman was drawn and portrayed. He didn't come across as a leader in the Justice League. The inclusion of Cyborg was good, as was Martian Manhunter, but the absence of Aquaman was noticeable (although there was little for him to do in this story). The villains ham it up a bit, which lessens the film a bit. These DC cartoons always feel the need to use endless exposition from the characters to explain what's going on, which makes the film feel weak. But enjoyable none the less. A darker film version with Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot would be interesting.

Eric H (mx) wrote: This film is particularly surprising. It's very interested in many of the facts of the real life obedience experiment. In fact, one could even argue that it seems to be very dry and non- climactic. The docudrama, of course, is restrained and doesn't overdo anything with large dramatizations of events and beats. I can also very much see many people getting bored with it however. Saarsgard is really great, totally inhabiting and creating that version of Milgram. Glad to see Winona Ryder on the screen again. Overall, it is very subdued, but it is a great introduction to the experiment that really shows as much as we can learn about what motivates people to commit such crimes.
