Tito and Me
Goran Markovic, known more for his dramatic work, achieved something that's eluded many great filmmakers - both smart and funny comedy. Based loosely on his own life as a kid growing up in Tito's communist Yugoslavia in the 1950s, the movie centers around 10-year-old Zoran whose inspired poem about Tito written on a spur-of-the-moment-basis as an in-class assignment, earns him a trip with other deserving pupils retracing Tito's "revolutionary trails" in Tito's hometown of Kumrovec.

Dafoe and Speedman are incredibly wooden, in fact Peter Stormare gives the only good performance (as always) and his is only a bit part. The whole thinf just lacks direction and suspense.

I was a bit annoyed by the main character, she is really 'wagamama' that is selfish, stubborn.. and she seems to care about no one. Poor girl. Maybe I would have liked it even more if the director wouldnt have been so into Tokyo's train system. I mean it is amazing seeing several train lines running above / next to each other, but please dont show it like 5 times in your movie... Though the train thing was somehow part of the story as Tadanobu Asano's hobby it didnt really fit because the movie wasnt really about his character...

The added bonus of a freeze frame ending of the Hung unmercifully beating the womb out of a scheming, cheating, girlfriend while shouting 'you bitch!!!' all gravelly with distortion on the microphone and echo effects over her screaming makes this a bona fide Munday pleaser for life. But here--although the acting is very fine and the directing is very fine--there is none of that. The title lets us know, immediately, what to expect; the characters are damned from the start, and yet we receive no sense of inevitability, no sense of passion (which would make sense, again, given the title), just bored people conducting a bored affair, as if by rote. We have to be told, repeatedly, that the two conspirators could not live without each other, because we cannot see that for ourselves; this is a major misfire, dramatically speaking, which insures that most of our amusement has to come from the periphery. Such a standard plot must have great, impassioned characters (like those of Italian opera) to enliven it, and this does not. (Is that why this is called "neorealism"?) Visconti, of course, would move on to greater things, and even find some shreds of internal humanity for his characters in later works (esp. Le Notti Bianche), but here we merely have gesture without motion, though the gestures are indeed quite pretty.

Will Ferrel and his basket ball team danced while wearing childish costumes to entertain the spectators pre-game. With the ever lovable Will Ferrel wrestling with a real brown bear, and a story of underdogs basket ball team rising to the challenge, this is quite an entertaining comedy.
