Desiree E (br) wrote: It was very very long. Overall I liked it. A different type of zombie movie. So much blood!!!!

Robert G (ag) wrote: Funny enough, with two confident leads that make it appealing enough. I didn't care much for Molly Gunn, but her co-lead, Ray Schleine was entertaining.

Janette R (kr) wrote: This version seamed longer and more developed in relationships than the later movie. The inner-Sybil personalities are less developed and less inter-talkative as many are only met at end. This movie shows is from Sybil's perspective in the beginning as she is very confused. Her councilor and boy friend play a larger role in this movie. The story in a more complete fashion showing her earlier and later in life. The music can be very irritating at times.

Paul H (gb) wrote: A wonderful film that follows a dark and twisted relationship between father and son. One could argue that the relationship forms a microcosm of many a real father and son scenario as the father - a cruel moneylender - time and again seeks to sabotage and undercut his son's attempts at success in an effort to strengthen his son's 'character'. Is his father motivated by love or jealousy? Does his behaviour satisfy both emotions? The consequences are tragic, nevertheless. Powerful performances, an excellent script, flawless direction are just three of the main ingredients that were harnessed to generate a well deserved Oscar for Best Foreign Language film in 1997. Much of the movie was shot in the basements and canals of the central Dutch city, Utrecht. Van Diem captures perfectly the darkness, the mist, the poverty and the filth of Rotterdam, a generation previous - the present day modern skyscrapers rendering the city unrecognisable. Present day Utrecht is, of course, neither grim or filthy, however, much of the old town is intact and has a menacing, subterrenean quality that is perfect for this movie.

Philip N (mx) wrote: Twenty five years later and I still smell the stench from this movie.

Nik M (us) wrote: Sansho the Bailiff has a determined set of values that proudly depict human will, love, and the importance of mercy and how they are reflected through its idealized characters. A Japanese masterpiece that is heart-wrenching and beautifully dramatic.
