Mary Kathryn P (gb) wrote: Though yes it is vulgar and completely lacking in character development outside of the romance trope, Serendipity is a great popcorn romance. It offers just what it set out to do, to bring smiles and to leave people with a warm and happy feeling. B+ on that front for sure.
Joe C (it) wrote: A compelling story to be sure, but the ham-fisted editing, less than subtle direction, and blas (C) score make it tough to watch at times. Still, an intriguing side-story of the Civil War, and a film that I nonetheless recommend. Grade: C+
Zachary M (us) wrote: Movies don't need over complicated plots or philosophical debates on the evil's of man to be amazing. That's because at it's core film is a visual medium. A way to express art, ideas, and opinions in a way that you can share with others. Truly, that's what this movie is, an art piece. You are hear to watch sights and visuals animated to some of the most powerful scores in history. And that's all a person needs. If you don't have the luxury of living near an art museum or a grand old opera, then feel free to sit back and relax, you can now say you've seen both without ever having to have left your home.

An awesome Japanese anime team got a couple American five year-olds, a horny kid around thirteen, a script from a bum, and they made The Venus Wars. The only thing cool about this movie are the vehicle designs and the idea of a colonized Venus. The acting of the characters, understand they are animated, is pretty bad. It's almost two hours long too. I would have given it a 6 if it just had ended around fifty minutes without the rest of the story. Pleh! This could have been cool, but it's not.

Matt G (nl) wrote: If Nancy Meyers directed a sexist / racist western, this would be it. It's pure and utter rom-com fluff with little-to-no narrative or character heft, not to mention some awful patronizing of Native Americans and gaspingly poor treatment of women. Clearly its only goal was to be entertaining, but even there it fails. Loud, boring, and unbearable.

Haneef A (mx) wrote: War of the Worlds (2005) is directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. It is based on an acclaimed science fiction novel by H.G. Wells. Cruise is a troubled father with some weaknesses...which make him interesting. He is forced to defend and take care of both his son and daughter when Northeast USA (and the world) are invaded by unknown forces. The acting is solid..with a young Fanning acting really well as the daughter with a perky attitude and a cameo by Tim Robbins as a troubled survivor. The camerawork is creative with incredible tracking shots (Spielberg as usual)...although the colour palette is too earthy and dark for my taste. The narrative is haunting and terrifying, and illustrates the depravity of humanity when confronted with crisis..but also the heroics of a troubled father. The ending is a bit anti-climactic and rushed, but still a solid movie all-around. An A- .
