Oleg L (mx) wrote: I find it amazing how much effort Hollywood has invested in sadistic/horror movies - the likes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Saw have used most unusual tools and ideas on making people suffer. Dramatic instrumental music, sudden moves and screams - are also not featured in this movie. Handcuffs and an old hunting gun - that's all Balabanov needs to show the pain over 80's pop music. I liked it because movie was about regular people - ignorant and selfish. No heroism, no sacrifices to save friends that we are so used to in american cinema. No blood, no action, no regrets. No zombies, monsters or any visual effects. Slow dialogue and silence - all we get. For those of us who know Balabanov, we could picture Makovetsky as the uni lecturer in the opening scene - and we recieve him but only as a voice. This was hard to get used to for me but you forget it pretty quickly as the plot unfolds. It's a dark, sick and disturbing movie but a must see alternative to western horror.
Roxanne R (au) wrote: A different and refreshing twist to the zombie franchise and glad to say this gem is on Netflix instant streaming. The Returned are humans that were zombies but they inject themselves daily with a protein that stops the spread of the virus and enables them to behave and look like normal human beings. Unfortunately an anti-return movement has started and they are attacking hospitals, crews and people who are the returned. So with the attacks on the rise and rumors that the protein stock is running low, chaos takes place forcing a couple to flee until things get back to normal. The story continues from there and although the ending is left open, the viewer knows what Kate (Emily Hampshire) is about to do. This film should stir discussions among viewers about many things: what will happen during a pandemic especially if medical supplies run low, how to contain the affected, etc. Recommended!

People trying to make a female empowerment film could probably learn a thing or two from Whale Rider, particularly Keisha Castle-Hughes' character and Academy Award nominated performance.

I'll admit that any film that uses Rameau's music so prominently gets points from me. Also, if I ever win the lottery, I will tear down every other house on the block and build Ben Kingsley's philosophic retreat where I will wear his Turkish costume. (Tthose critics who found it artificial seem to have totally missed the point.)

Shane J (ca) wrote: A reaaly good attempt at a slasher flick pretty much making jason from friday the 13th and re-imagning him as a cop. Z'dar is excellent as the mania cop even with the little amount he has to do and the deaths etc are pretty well done for the limited budget. For all b movie fans bruce campbell is in the lead as well :-). One thing that does stand out for me is the music a very creepy little tune. Its my dream to direct the remake!! could really be good with the right money.

Chris M (ru) wrote: One of the better Universal monster movies. Stars Lon Chaney Jnr reprising his role as the the Wolfman and Lugosi as Frankensteins' monster. Directed by Roy William Neil who also directed many the Sherlocks Holmes (Rathbone & Bruce) movies, has the same feel, atmosphere and cinematography as those. Features a great performance from Chaney Jnr with some effective early werewolf transformations. Only let down slightly by Lugosi's monster and rather rushed ending. Overall a pretty memorable and enjoyable early Hollywood money spinner.

Paul D (ca) wrote: This movie had a fun cast, but the story wasn't all that interesting. Chris Evans is enjoyable to watch, but the movie fails him. It is every bit as cliche as most rom-coms are, but it at least tries to be aware of it. Overall, I just can't see this movie melting any hearts.
