Post G (us) wrote: A very curious film. The characters and themes are much more complicated and morally grey than Ken Kesey's most-famous film, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. Conversely, or perhaps as a consequence, it seems like the movie deals with slightly less important issues. I left the film quite confused about how I was meant to feel, although perhaps this was a positive thing. Who were the "good guys"? Did they "win" or "lose"? Even if they had completely "won", would it still have been a empty victory? The direction is excellent, and I found the lumber scenes to be one of the most tense I've seen!

Nik B (jp) wrote: British emperialism. Marlon Brando plays a British officer brought to Portugal-controlled island rich with sugar cane. Worked by African slaves, Brando is contracted to improve trade with a dictatorial regime. He does a fantastic job setting up a revolution simply by finding a mark in a water-carrying slave in the streets. He manipulates the situations in which the slave learns to murder first for his own protection, then the protection of others, and then makes him a leader. During this half, Brando makes a fantastic speech relating the difference between British occupation and more passive buyer/seller role to the difference between a whore and a wife. Simply- which is more profitable. A decade later, the leader has proven himself a greater hinderance to the British profiteers than the last guy. They send Brando back, this time to either negotiate a settlement or- as it turns out- elimiante the problem. In the end is a lesson in corporate control of even our most basic freedoms. Even our lives. The wealthy Britains, who simply wanted a profitable sugar trade were able to get military might on their side to achieve it. Filmed on location, I really hated the direction. It had that sixties, chaos movement and made the action harder to follow. The not-always-lined-up voice over looping was also distracting. Brando's dialogue was well-written and his performance was stellar. And thankfully, his character takes up 75% of the movie. I had to focus just on him, though, including his colorful scarf style, to continue to enjoy the proceedings.

JB R (nl) wrote: This is one of Fuller's masterpieces (of which there are many). it was this point in the early sixties where Fuller's raw journalistic realism began to mix with a proto-psychedelic quality of which this film is a great example. The energy of the film is so powerful even after all of this time and he is able to make the film entertaining on a certain level but laden with so much metaphorical layers it requires multiple viewings over time. The photography by Stanley Cortez is pristine (though Fuller himself filmed the color dream sequences in 16mm). As usual Fuller was ahead of his time with this film, which stands as a testament to his unique artistic vision and approach. A true American cinematic masterpiece.

Ashley H (fr) wrote: Battle Cry is a fine film. It is about a group of young Marines have adventures in love and war. The battle sequences are outstanding. Van Heflin and Aldo Ray give excellent performances. The screenplay is well written. Raoul Walsh did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama and romance. Battle Cry is a must see.
