It's called "2 Days In New York", because Marion invited some of her family relatives, of Jeannot (Albert Delpy, her sister, Rose(Alexia Landeau), who brought along her boyfriend, Manu(Alexandre Nahon), to check out the selling of her exhibition art gallery happening in 2 days from their arrival from France. While, I liked the first hour, I thought the movie started to become pretentious and whacked, after the arrival of Marion's kooky family, with the most annoying one of all, is Marion's sister's boyfriend Manu. Some of the dialogue has been improvised with Chris Rock- talking to himself, to a large cut out, poster board of President Obama. And there's also a scene, about Marion selling her soul, from a form of a piece of paper, which that idea may have been inspired by "The Simpsons" episode called "Bart Sells His Soul". There were times when Marion's eccentric family's visit of 2 days seemed like 2 very long years. 2 out of 4 stars

(kr) wrote: Funny Ha Ha was a lot better. This one is frequently boring rather than insightful and I just don't have any tolerance for a film populated entirely by obnoxious pseudo-intellectual hipsters. The dialogue is sometimes as ridiculous as that suggests.

(it) wrote: I just rewatched this all the way through. I had seen half of it before and it was pretty enjoyable. If you're into cracking into the human psyche this movie does in a light hearted way. Overall a feel good movie. Star-studded cast. Continually expressed how people just want someone to vent their thoughts and feelings to.

This is an insanely small film, and quite difficult to come across, as it isn't even available on dvd. If by some fortunate circumstance, you are presented with the opportunity to view this film, you're in for a very solid film.The acting in this film is very understated with a strong tie to reality. Ashley Judd plays the protagonist, Ruby, in her first film performance. She is excellent in this film, always buried in her character and never losing sense of character. The supporting cast if very understated, but they play nicely off of Judd. Judd's character is the core of this film, and the screenplay very directly revolves around her. Narration by Judd's character is prominent in the film, and serves as a device to express her personal thoughts. The narration is very effective in this film, as it gives us an insight to the thoughts of a character who isn't necessarily all that complex on the surface.The sequence that stands out in my mind is the one in the hotel laundry room. Ruby is completely downtrodden at her employment situation. She is forced to take a job cleaning hotel sheets, which leaves her feeling dehumanized and defeated. There are two female co-workers in the laundry-room which serve as a sort of guiding pair to Ruby, which provide an interesting look at employment roles and class associations that come with them.The two men in Ruby's life represent opposite ends on the human spectrum. On one hand there is the ultimate selfish American male, and on the other the "selfless" male. Interestingly, neither of them are anything close to perfect for Ruby, because they both embody single-minded ideals, when Ruby is searching for freedom."Ruby" is a very overlooked gem of early '90's cinema. It functions as a story of a young woman trying to make a life for herself, as well as a class tale of a very specific era.

This is one of those films where there is only one smart person (Chuck Norris) surrounded by a town full of idiots! And as an action fan, their is only one memeorable fight scene at a bar with the rest of the film resulting to absoultely nothing! 2 out of 4

(br) wrote: Long before the Academy awarded Kathryn Bigelow her Best Director Oscar in 2010, the Golden Globes had given their first female Best Director award more than twenty five years earlier. The woman to receive such an honour? Barbra Streisand. No matter what your opinion of her, there can be no denying that Ms. Streisand is one talented lady. A fine actress of both stage and screen, multi Grammy winning recording artist, and a director too. Yentl is testament to her ambition and fearlessness as an auteur. However unless orthodox Jewish, gender-bending musical-dramas are your particular preference, Yentl might not be a film you particularly enjoy. The story follows Streisand's Yentl, a brash but intelligent girl who wishes to spend her days studying Jewish scripture rather than tending to household chores; something frowned upon in Orthodox Judaism. Following the tragic death of her father, she cuts her hair and dresses as a man in order to enroll at university and become a scholar. Naturally this leads to a complex web of deceit, as Yentl falls in love with her classmate Avigdor (Mandy Patinkin), and herself becomes the object of desire for a young woman named Hadass (Amy Irving). What unfolds is a deepening triangle of love and lies that escalades to startling levels before Yentl admits the truth. Throughout the film Streisand narrates her character's inner monologues through a series of musical numbers, though few stand out. Most notable is 'Papa, Can You Hear Me?' which has become easily the most famous song from the soundtrack. As a challenge to traditional gender roles and the pure primitiveness of such extreme patriarchal society, Yentl manages to get its message across fairly well. It's honest and heartfelt, and shows the lengths some are willing to go in order to achieve equality. However the biggest problem here lies in the fact that Streisand is so clearly a woman in every scene. Fair enough, I can imagine that some of the men in the academy may not notice her lack of facial hair and womanly voice, but the only person in the entire film who suspects anything is a half-blind old lady. While I know the story is much more about what Yentl's cross dressing represents rather than how good it actually is, I couldn't help but be distracted by how glaring this problem is, and as such felt the credibility of the film suffered. Similarly I found it hard to agree with Yentl's constant avoidance of telling the truth. She is given a number of opportunities to come clean, but instead takes the cowardly route, allowing her ruse to grow bigger and more damaging to those around her, even going to the extreme of marrying an unsuspecting young girl to avoid coming clean. As such I found Yentl a frustrating film. Though I admire Streisand's talents as both director and actress, as well as her intentions with the story, I found the complete lack of believability a real hindrance to my enjoyment of the film. Also as a musical the film fails to capture the essence of what made Streisand so wonderful in Funny Girl for example, and with the exception of one or two, the songs all sounds very similar.
