(mx) wrote: I liked the idea of this film, the propaganda footage showing only a fraction of the director's experience, and him filling in much of the gaps with his clay figurines, in dioramas and tableaux. The DVD we had only showed about half the English subtitles to the original French narration, so we heard the English, but this was very monotonous and detracted from the message. I did not get a real sense of a complete project or even a whole story

(us) wrote: In short - you must see this film.. It's power can be seen by the fact that Katalin Varga the film googles higher than the original heroin...but interestingly the two appear to have parallels.. The film is artistically shot with care and authentically delivers what feels like a real view of Romanian Countryside life. The story is harrowing but the fact that the initial rape itself is not shown at all indicates early that this film is completely at the other end of spit on your grave etc. This films puts flowers on the grave of an East European hero. Katalin's story reminds us of the basic familial connections, e.g. father and son, that drive us, and the inbuilt inequality between male and female that have not been escaped. It is a swansong to a better society that not only legalised sexual equality but also practised it, and to an ideal which placed the needs of society as a whole above inbred animalistic urges to feather own's nest at the expense of others. It sings of the cynicism that fills the vacuum of failed aspirations. All the actors and actresses are great, without exception and this story delivers a blow that inspires reaction from it's viewers. Good film. The boat scene is a classic movie moment not to be missed.

(de) wrote: I couldn't picture Albert Finney playing Tom Jones until I saw this, and he completely won me over as the lovable scoundrel. In places, the visuals and tone of the film feel completely authentic. Other moments, particularly the uber-British irreverent scenes breaking the fourth wall, have the effect of ruining the illusion. Some restraint should have been employed. This might have been the first use of the headache-inducing shaky cam technique (which also has the effect of pulling you out of the film), making this Finney and Paul Greengrass's first collaboration before the Jason Bourne movies. Overall, though, Tom Jones has all the essential elements of Henry Fielding's novel and brings it to life artistically.
(kr) wrote: Much similar to Make Mine Music with a few hits and misses. Pesco Bill and Johnny Appleseed stand out more but special mention goes to the Blame it on the Samba sequence for having such high energy. Not a great film overall but still worth a look
(fr) wrote: This is Marlene Dietrich's first Hollywood movie. It's not quite as outstanding as say, "The Blue Angel" but it's a pretty solid film nonetheless. Marlene Dietrich plays a lounge performer in Morocco caught in a love triangle between a legionnaire (Gary Cooper) and a charming rich expatriate (Adolphe Menjou). The film's pretty standard but the three leads are good and the ending is quite moving.

(ca) wrote: I watched this movie before I began my "Oscar Watch". What I do (because my opinion matters) lol. I watch all the movies to see if I agree with the nominations and winners. This year along with that there was some controversey about a snub toward Black movies and actor. Creed, Straight Out of Compton, Concussion, Chiraq and Beasts of No Nation with actors and actresses in those movies as well being snubbed. I was going to watch those movies anyway (except Chiraq I am still on the fence about watching that). I had already watched SOC. I havent watched Concussion, but I doubt seeing it would change my opinion..laughing at myself cuz people really care what I think.. Well here is my problem I was bored, really bored. Clearly people liked a movie where 100 yr old people sat around talking and talking. For me it was like what KUWTK will be like in 50 yrs..and (I apologize in advance for whomever I offend) the love scene in this movie and Carol was to much for me. I fast forwarded through both. I mean come on..100 yr old people having sex? Thats not sexy...Nomination deserved..i wont say no..i an sure it is something I could not appreciate about a movie that was 1 hr and 39 minutes of conversation.
