Gustav M (br) wrote: a moronic storyline full of moronic actors, with moronic dialogue and a whole heap of moronic plot happenings. it's hard to see why anyone bothered, pretty much everything about this film was low-key and droll. it's impressive what they managed to train the dogs to do, but it can't really distract the audience of what a boring film it is. the best thing about it is the nice, jazzy tune that plays along with the end credits.
Tim M (ag) wrote: i had watched this when it first came out in 96. i remembered i didn't care for it, but forgot why i didn't, so i watched it again on bbc the other nite. the first time roberts openned her mouth, i remembered. her irish accent was probably the worst i ever heard, but she still acted the part adequately- which means the director is the one at fault here and why he never made it. a director's job is to look past the 'star-power' and focus on the work itself. this, obviously, did not happen. any director worth the butter on your popcorn, would have seen the first daily, and could have tastefully told roberts that the accent wasn't working. the accent was totally self-indulging and had nothing to do with the story anyway- who cared if her character was from ireland- no one else in the cast was. this may seem like a trivial criticism but when most every line she spoke, reminded u of the hoax, it became important. and as to the director who was obviously overcome by roberts' 'star-power', buy a ticket like the rest of us if your fantasies were too close to coming to life.
