(nl) wrote: This movie was poor. The storyline was great, but the animation and most of the acting was horrible.Clearly this movie didnt have much of a budget. So in the end, the storyline practically saved the movie a bit.

(fr) wrote: This is one of very few films out there portraying the tragedies of Vietnamese people after the Viet Cong \communists took over. Well done, considering the budget that they have to work with. Despites setting around war, the storyline stays very humanistic. The film provides moving insights to the Vietnamese conscious and the human spirit that would touch anyone regardless of their background.
(kr) wrote: Katsuhiro Otomo creates a frustratingly dull and frequently annoying animated tale that lacks the depth and originality of his previous work despite the marvelous visuals and production values.
(ag) wrote: This sequels really dumbs it down to a typical slasher flick and is just completely uninteresting. I will admit that some of the effects were very good, though. I hate the whole 'goth kids in a murder cult' element towards the end but I'm not surprised it was added given this movie came out around the height of the Columbine scare.

(au) wrote: While transgressive cinema is usually immensely boring and self-satisfied given its supposedly "daring" nature, In the Realm of the Senses actually feels substantial given the politically rebellious nature of its existence and the legitimate story it communicates through near-constant sex scenes. While I can't help but find it problematic that a picture meant to operate as an act of opposition to its country's strict set of social mores centers around a couple destroyed by an obsession with sex, literally watching various major historical events go by without ever acknowledging them lest they waste one second that they could devote to sex, it's certainly possible to see this as a representation of the consequences of the oppressive societal stigmas around the act so I'm choosing to give it a pass. The sets are gorgeous, the performances are excellent (obviously, given what the actors are asked to do) and if it feels repetitive, that's more than certainly intentional and helps articulate the film's point. While it's easier to admire this film than enjoy it, it's an undeniable piece of filmmaking with a point and that deserves to be praised.

In addition, there are some notable actors that one would recognize. A great Friday night DVD flick with your significant other, LOL.

(us) wrote: This lags at a bit in the middle but this is a tense and excellent Western. It plays more like a Greek Tragedy (mixed with lurid melodrama) than a standard revenge Western. The last minute or so is a bit cheesy but it's a solid genre exercise.
(it) wrote: One of the most heartbreaking story ever told about grieving. It is essentially about a father driving his two daughters to their dream destination, a fun fair, while he musters enough courage to tell the girls that their mother has just died in the Gulf War. Clint Eastwood composes his signature soundtrack that can move tears just by listening to the album.
