Robert H (mx) wrote: Combining English and French into a purely Canadian film is a great idea. Concentrating on a small group of students rather than the entire school also makes sense. So why does this film make the mistake of filing out the cast with more non-essential cast and leave so many missed comedic opportunities open ended. There are just too many ideas introduced without closure. It felt like a comedian who starts to tell a joke, only gives you half the delivery, and doesn't really give you any kind of punch line.French Immersion is a mess of a film that still manages to hit enough of the right buttons to make this Canadian able to get some enjoyment from it. Just because Canada is a mixture of culture, race, and tradition, with everything thrown into a mixing pot, doesn't mean you should use that as a basis for a film. Without the right mixture of ingredients, your cake will not bake, your soufle will not rise, your soup will need salt and your film... will fall flat.

I am quite sure Hugh Grant himself must be embarrassed with such a performance. This movie had absolutely no story line or plot, paper-thin acting, horrendous values and was a complete waste of time. I managed to make it through the entire thing with the vain hope that somehow the production might redeem itself in the end, but alas, this was not to be the case. To anyone considering a purchase of this movie, I strongly advise you to think twice so you are not disappointed as we were.

It is quite a beautiful film with amazing set design, costumes and overall art direction. The film is tinted a variety of colors and changes the mood of the film in abundance as it changes throughout. The creature himself is a mystical jewish behemoth molded from clay who is infused with life via a Jewish/Dark arts ritual which includes calling on a demonic creature (Azaroth) to speak the "magic" words. I don't know what this version of any Judaism is. It certainly is full of the Occult. But that is the method used to "necromance" the dead clay to life. The gate , walk and demeanor of the Golem seems what might have helped inspire Karloff and james Whale when deciding how their Frankenstein might behave. Throughout the film it is easy to see touches and flourishes that have added to the future of horror films. It's actually quite a tame film but the threat is there that the Golem will turn even on those who he has protected. This film is another exciting example (like Caligari) of how quickly changing the cinema landscape was. Soon these larger films (scope and length) would start influencing artists to new heights in the medium.

Kelly K (ag) wrote: This is a typical rom-com. So basically, it is sort of funny, romantic, cheesy and overly predictable, but has a few good scenes that keep you interested to the very end.
