Private U (us) wrote: I'll start by saying I can't pretend to know very much about the life of Ernesto Guevara, and the little I do know could be written down on a post-it note. My evaluation of this film is based on its execution as a movie and not as a an accurate historical account. I first heard of this movie as a teenager and at the time, watching a movie with the word "diaries" in it was of no interest to me. It sounded like it would be quite bland. Eventually I decided to give it a shot, and in the first scene I was hooked. The music, the cinematography, the internal monologue all brought me into a new world. Even just watcing a character packing a bag in the way it was presented was intriguing to watch and instilled the type of excitement in me as a soldier gearing up in a war movie. As the film went on, I found myself learning about the world in which the characters lived in a way that reflected the main characters' own experiences, culminating in a final retrospective scene that really makes you realise where you started and where you ended up - both the characters and the audience. The subtleties in this film in exploring grand themes is something every filmmaker should aspire to accomplish. It avoids the hyperbole often demonstrated in stories of personal growth and globe trotting. This was the first non-blockbuster film to shake me from my seat and really give me an idea of the beauty that filmmaking could be. This movie, to me, was flawless.

When the country dishonors its Samurai, and they are driven to acts of desperation, leading to cruelty and further dishonor, the country spirals, and this movie set in 17th century seems to reflect decline in then present day (1962) Japan.The movie is quite beautiful visually, with traditional Japanese architecture and at one point a swaying bamboo forest framed beautifully by director Masaki Kobayashi. The story is taut and works on many levels, first and foremost as a vengeance with honor tale, which might remind you of an American Western, including a couple of epic battle scenes. It also has the individual man, disillusioned and saying that the Samurai code he lives by is a faade, and yet acting honorably, against a multitude misled by corrupt leaders. It's one against many in a battle that is timeless and certainly relevant today, and whose results are sadly akin to the entropy of the universe. "Who can know the depths of another man's heart?" the Samurai asks, signaling a need for empathy. Indeed.

The costumes are laughable, the acting is wooden, the violence is difficult to watch and the sexist and racist undertones are very unsettling. This being said the film still works on some level despite everything it has going against it. The movie is a perfect example of efficient filmmaking that revels in its grittiness and lack of polish. It is also prophetic in its look at the rise of inner city gang violence. Like most exploitation films it is hard to know if Jack Hill had any satirical or ideological intentions with this film, but years of criticism and reviewing of such movies have created a cult of people who believe these factors exist in these films whether they were intended to or not. Ebert called Hill(TM)s production values sleazy? and his photography and editing slapdash.? I(TM)m inclined to agree, but somehow it adds a charm to the film that could never have existed if it had been made by a seasoned filmmaker. The film is overloaded with clich (C)s, situations that simply don(TM)t work and conflict that seems to come out of nowhere. Also the actors who are supposed to be in high school all appear to be in their mid 30(TM)s. I don(TM)t know how it works or if it even works the more I think about it. The damn thing is just entertaining on some base level.
