Stephen Y (fr) wrote: A period movie taking place in 1932 about a Karate Master and his three students. While I'm not exactly sure (since my Japanese comprehension is 95%), I believe the movie takes place in Machuko or what is today northern China. An evil military commander tries to take over various Karate schools using eminent domain for the Japanese war effort. However, the story evolves when the Karate master dies and the two senior students fight for the right to possess their Karate teacher's black belt and also the right to carry on the Karate school's name and lineage. One senior student is aggressive and believes the best fighter should carry on the school. The other senior student is passive and follows a more philosophical approach. The Karate displayed in the movie is authentic Okinawan Karate and the actors may be real practitioners. A simple but well constructed movie. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes Martial Arts movies or a good simple Japanese film.

But when it isn't employing boing-boing and tweeting bird sound effects during fight scenes, it actually manages to be a fairly compelling story. The performances, over the top though they may be, are generally excellent, with the possible exception of Fabian, whose acting ability is about equal to most pop stars'. In the end, it's rather longer than it needs to be, and certainly isn't among the best of John Wayne's work, but it's entertaining, and manages a decent number of laughs.
