You, the Living
In the Swedish city of Lethe, people from different walks of life take part in a series of short, deadpan vignettes that rush past. Some are just seconds long, none longer than a couple of minutes. A young woman (Jessica Lundberg) remembers a fantasy honeymoon with a rock guitarist. A man awakes from a dream about bomber planes. A businessman boasts about success while being robbed by a pickpocket and so on. The absurdist collection is accompanied by Dixieland jazz and similar music.

(jp) wrote: What's not to like? GREAT actors, slick story, awesome music by the maestro, Ennio Morricone. A perfect crime film!
(fr) wrote: Thematically daring, although the lack of budget shows quite often. Ray Milland plays the father role like he's in the mob, although his direction is to be commended for trying to overcome the movie's limitations. Enjoyable on a MST3000 level if at least for Frankie Avalon trying to put the moves on a girl who's obviously just been gang-raped for several days; seems like hormones rage even in Year ZERO.
(es) wrote: Another great war movie from the amazing Sam Fuller. I am ADDICTED to his editing. SOOOOOO awesome.
(au) wrote: Like Le Million, Clair uses sound, music and silence effectively in this early sync sound film. The technique at work makes the simple melodrama interesting. However, the story is basically 3 men fighting over a girl who has all the agency of a doll, which is kinda a drag.
(jp) wrote: hmm; definitely interesting - i can see why this was a great film for the time period. it's funny that this movie is all "Orson Welles this" and "Orson Welles that", when his character doesn't even appear until the end and only lasts like 30 minutes of the whole film. but i guess his character is by far the most profound & was probably quite influential. the story this is based on is also interesting - i did some research afterwards. people be crazy.
