Panta O (mx) wrote: This French drama, written and directed by Emmanuelle Bercot is bravely revealing us the problem which exist in most of the EU countries since the Union began. In a market economy, education has to make money and the high fees of education are paid by the students. The story of Laura is a story of one of the students who works in a call center, but even with an extra job she cannot meet her monthly payments. One day she faints in public during a lecture because she hasn't eaten enough, and instead of help by the student counselor, she is given the advice to sue her parents. She knows that her working class parents can't afford to pay more money. Her electricity is cut off and when it comes back she explores on internet a dubious website where matured men advertise in order to get to know women. She contacts a man called Joe who wants to pay her for keeping him company... One of the things to remember after watching this film is the acting! Dborah Franois as Laura, Alain Cauchi as Joe and Mathieu Demy as Benjamin did everything for us to believe that these are real lives which suffer in those situations which seemed like a solution for their problems! It is sad that we had no chance to know the characters better due to the lack of their development in the screenplay . If you like good acting and lots of sex scenes which exploit the perfect body of the actress Dborah Franois, and you don't mind the weaknesses in the screenplay, give it a go. Very watchable.

Small budgets often are the inspiration for filmmakers to substitute the lack of financial resources (which actually has never mattered cinematically, but oh well...) with talent, with ideas displayed with convincing emphasis. Thumb up. 75/100 P.S. This is my prefered version for the reasons of character development and pacing, the main elements which are normally the most affected in a 'chop-off' process.

Alex S (ru) wrote: This could of been better, especially when you got Michael Keaton as the villain, that is literally the best thing about the film because he's convincing.

Lisa H (ag) wrote: Marcelino rented this film as part of his "research". Unless you are looking to watch how badly a Puerto Rican actor plays an Arab terrorist it's not worth it. It's not even a B-Movie, it's a C-Movie...as in crap...sorry Marcelino.

Ali M (fr) wrote: Directed by the famous Vittorio De Sica, and with Cesare Zavattini doing his trademark poetic screenplay, Shoeshine definitely deserves its place as one of the first foreign films to with the Oscar of the same name.

Kevin R (es) wrote: Some people just ain't got no respect for the truth.Henry Stanley is well regarded in the newspaper industry for his coverage of the great wars against the Indians while in the field. He is sent to Africa where few civilized men have ventured and where Dr. Livingstone has gone missing. Stanley has been asked to find Dr. Livingstone, find out where he has been and what he is up to, and bring him back to America. Stanley will have to leave his love interest behind. Is leaving the love of his life worth the adventure, and can he find Livingstone on this gigantic, mysterious continent? "They hate the whites for trying to stop the slave trade."Henry King, director of The Song of Bernadette, Twelve O'clock High, Carousel, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, The Gun Fighter, and Carolina, delivers Stanley and Livingstone. The storyline for this picture is just okay and wasn't as interesting as I am used to from a Tracy picture. The acting is even below average and the cast includes Spencer Tracy, Nancy Kelly, Charles Coburn, Walter Brennan, and Henry Hull."Didn't you know better than to bring this civilian into Indian territory?"I DVR most Spencer Tracy pictures and found this one to be very disappointing. The plot was straightforward and a bit predictable and the conclusion was awkward and unfulfilling. Overall, I generally recommend seeing a movie if Spencer Tracy is in it, this is a rare exception where I recommend skipping it."You're going to Africa."Grade: C-
